Gas Strut Orientation and Lid Nut Placement
When it comes to assembling The Acoustic Box, a huge advantage is that they can be put together in as little as 15 minutes. But, the right installation technique isn’t just about getting it together — it’s about ensuring long-term performance, reliability, and safety. Two small but critical details can make all the difference: the orientation of the gas strut and the position of the lid nuts.
Gas Strut Orientation — Rod Down, Cylinder Up
Gas struts must always be installed with the rod (shaft) at the bottom and the hydraulic cylinder (the thicker section) at the top. This positioning allows gravity to keep a small amount of oil pooled around the internal seal, keeping it lubricated and preventing gas leakage or premature wear.
When installed upside down, the shaft can dry out over time, increasing friction and damaging the seal — dramatically reducing the strut’s lifespan. In cases where we have had to replace struts under warranty, generally its because the gas struts had been installed upside down.
Even though our gas struts are proudly made in Australia to the highest quality standards, correct installation is key to getting their full service life and maintaining smooth lid operation.
Lid Nut Placement — Flat Inside, Acorn Outside
When installing the lid, the acorn nuts should always be positioned on the outside of the lid, with the flat screw heads on the inside. If the acorn nuts are fitted internally, they can catch on the gas strut when closing the lid — preventing it from sealing fully.
A lid that doesn’t close properly can affect water runoff, cause the lid to sit unevenly, or even feel unstable when operated. Correct nut placement ensures a secure, flush fit and maintains the clean, professional finish expected of every Acoustic Box installation.
